What is a pulley on a conveyor?

Conveyor pulleys are mechanical devices used to change the direction of a belt in a conveyor belt system along with tensioning and driving the belt. A conveyor system will always consist of a head pulley and a tail pulley. All pulleys are comprised of these components which include: End discs.

What is the difference between a conveyor roller and a pulley?

Conveyor pulleys are often associated with rollers due to their similar appearance. Yet conveyor pulleys are significantly stronger than rollers and help keep the conveyor belt running smoothly.

Types of Conveyor Pulleys:

1. Drive Pulley: Also known as the head pulley, the drive pulley is connected to a motor or other power source and is responsible for driving the conveyor belt. It provides the necessary tension for the belt to move.

2. Return Pulley: The return pulley, often located at the opposite end of the conveyor from the drive pulley, supports the return run of the belt and helps maintain belt tension. It is usually less complex than the drive pulley.

3. Snub Pulley: A snub pulley is used to create additional friction on the conveyor belt, increasing the angle of wrap around the drive pulley, which improves traction and reduces slipping.

4. Bend Pulley: Bend pulleys are used to guide the belt around corners or changes in direction. They are also called deflection or idler pulleys.

5. Take-Up Pulley: The take-up pulley is used to maintain the proper tension in the conveyor belt. It is adjustable to accommodate changes in belt length or tension.

6. Wing Pulley: These pulleys have protruding wings or ridges on the pulley surface to aid in the shedding of material carryback, which can accumulate on the pulley.

Conveyor Pulleys are typically mounted on shafts and rotate to move the conveyor belt or chain. Conveyor pulleys are crucial components of conveyor systems, and they come in various types and sizes, depending on the specific needs of the conveyor and the materials being transported.

Note:

Proper maintenance and alignment of conveyor pulleys are essential to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the conveyor system and to prevent premature wear and damage to the belt.
