Comb rollers, also called rubber disc return rollers, support the returning belt through a series of spaced contact discs. They are relevant when carried-back material can collect on a smooth return roller and create an uneven contact surface. Reviewing the actual carryback condition helps establish whether this arrangement belongs in the return support system.
The disc arrangement is different from a conventional plain return roller and from an impact roller positioned beneath a loading chute. Disc spacing, profile and retention should follow the intended return duty. A comb roller can be part of a broader response to build-up, but it does not replace a review of the discharge cleaner, belt condition and the places where material is collecting. Compare alternatives using the same belt and mounting information.
During inspection, check that all discs are present and that wear is reasonably even across the contact area. Look at shaft retention and free rotation as well as the outer rubber. If deposits return quickly after cleaning, discuss the whole return strand and discharge arrangement with the maintenance team rather than treating one roller as the only source of the problem.
